Health Insurance

Insurance options available to low-income or undocumented residents of California

Covered California

The new marketplace that makes it possible for individuals and families to get free or low- cost health insurance through Medi-Cal, or to get help paying for private health insurance. Covered California can help you choose a private insurance plan that meets your health needs and budget. Any Californian can get health insurance through Covered California if he or she is a state resident and cannot get affordable health insurance through a job. The amount of financial help is based on household size and family income. Applicants qualify if their income meets the income limits. (Click here to get started).

NOTE: Undocumented immigrants do not qualify for a health plan under Covered California.

Medi-Cal

Medi-Cal offers free or low-cost health coverage for California residents who meet eligibility requirements.  Most applicants who apply through Covered California and enroll in Medi-Cal will receive care through managed health plans.

Currently, California’s Medi-Cal is also offered to undocumented immigrants younger than 26 or 50 and older; if they are a recipient for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA); if they are currently pregnant or were recently pregnant.

Additionally, the expansion of Medi-Cal expected to begin no later than Jan. 1, 2024 will provide state-funded health insurance to an additional 700,000 undocumented residents ages 26-49.
